Transient types

The jump can be caused by several different kinds of sudden events, or "visual transients". Besides the sudden replacement of a random pattern or texture by another, uncorrelated texture, we can simply invert contrast—making the light areas dark and vice versa—and the jump still looks the same. Another way to set off the jump is to rotate the texture, either forwards or backwards, by an angle beyond a certain limit: this is shown in the "real steps" demo. Yet another way to trigger the jump is to show the moving pattern to just one eye, and suddenly switch it to the other eye. Many people can see the jump by simply blinking. However, not all visual transients lead to the jump (for example, sudden flashes in the background do not).
